Part one of our southern adventures: El Calafate. Located in the south of Patagonia, El Calafate is named after the calafate berry. Legend has it that if you eat the calafate berry, you will one day return to El Calafate. Perrito Moreno by MoonlightThis was truly an amazing experience. A full moon and no clouds as a requirement, we were so lucky to get to do this! Cabalgata con los GauchosA very fun horse riding trip to Lago Argentino, accompanied by some real argentine gauchos. Perrito MorenoThe main attraction: the Perrito Moreno glacier. We took an "alternative tour" which entailed a scenic (but unpaved) route to the glacier, a hike, some time on the balconies, and finally a boat trip. Flora & FaunaWe saw so many animals and flowers and plants on our hike :)
A lot of IceTo see the glacier Perrito Moreno, we first followed a trail along the lake's coast, which had great views. Then we were able to get closer and observe it from a series of balconies. Finally, we took a boat trip, to see it from below. There's even a pic of me standing on iceberg!!! Click [here] if you want to see a video of a piece of the glacier breaking off. Pay attention to the amazing hues of blue in the glacier. Pictures I took from the plane: El Calafate, and the glacier (big solid white area in the middle). Also, typical Patagonian cordero (baa), prepared on the asador. |
